How Gary Paffett left DTM as Champion to find new challenges in Formula E

Imagine racing in one of motorsport’s best championships, competing for a top manufacturer and heading for your second drivers’ title. Sounds like the dream, right? For Gary Paffett, 2018 should have been a simple: focus on winning the DTM Championship title with Mercedes.

DTM was a series Paffett had raced in for the past fifteen years with great success but that was all to come to an end when Mercedes announced they would be quitting DTM at the end of the 2018 season, in favour of the all-electric Formula E Championship.

“Shock. Utter shock,” was how Paffett described to katyfairman.com when explaining his initial reaction to the news that Mercedes were leaving DTM. “It was something that shocked all of us, it really did. Nobody expected it to happen. There are always rumours here or there about one manufacturer pulling out of this or that, but Mercedes have been the ones that have been [in DTM] through everything. They are the ones that held it together when it was struggling. They had been there for thirty years without a break. So, it was a big shock not only to the outside world but to us in the team because nobody saw it coming.”

Exclusive: Wehrlein set to balance Mahindra FE drive with another series

His name has been linked with the F1 Toro Rosso seat, as well as various Formula E drives, however ex-F1 driver and former DTM Champion Pascal Wehrlein was confirmed to be joining the Mahindra Racing line up for season five of Formula E yesterday.

His partnership with Formula E veteran Jérôme D’Ambrosio has impressed many and it’s hoped that the new duo can continue the impressive form the team has managed over the past four seasons with three wins to their name.

However, speaking to katyfairman.com, the Formula E debutant revealed that part of the influence of singing with Mahindra was because he could participate in another motorsport series in addition to his Formula E drive.

The reality of being a woman in motorsport

The reality of being a woman in motorsport

The reaction of people when I tell them that I am a motorsport journalist is usually met with total surprise. Maybe it is my age, or the fact that I don’t “look” like I would be interested in motorsport, but usually it’s the fact that I am a woman. The responses are never negative though, normally a reference to Suzi Perry or Lee McKenzie and words along the lines of “wow, that is different.” I always find it funny though because, to me, my gender isn’t really relevant to how I do my job – it never has been and it never will be.

Blomqvist adapts to “lack of sound” in Formula E pre-season test

Blomqvist adapts to “lack of sound” in Formula E pre-season test

“I am getting my head around it, slowly but surely,” Tom Blomqvist begins after completing his second day of Formula E testing. “There are a lot of things you have to manage and take on during a run, a lot of things to digest but so far so good.”

Blomqvist, a 23-year-old BMW Works driver, is currently competing in DTM but has been gifted the opportunity to test the MS&AD Andretti car in Valencia for the official Formula E pre-season testing. Despite not having much experience in a Formula E car, an odd lap here and there for a shakedown he completed before Valencia, the British driver said he found the car and the level of management “interesting” and a “big change” from his previous motoracing adventures.

Is Formula E the most misunderstood motorsport?

Is Formula E the most misunderstood motorsport?

Can we just start off with me holding up my hands and saying ‘I get it’.

The noise isn’t quite soul-shattering, the speed might not be breath-taking and the lack of an actual engine is an unappealing factor for many, however Formula E continues to attract not only devoted fans and well-respected drivers, but major manufactures are flocking to the sport in outstanding numbers. Not bad when you consider that the championship is just about to wrap up its third season at a double-header in Montreal this weekend. Despite it’s success both on and off track, Formula E still hasn’t made it as a ‘fan favourite’ just yet. There is no denying that the sound and the battery have meant fans just can’t engage with the sport in the way they would like to but looking past those subjects, Formula E is one of motorsport’s strongest series. Yes, it is no IndyCar or Formula 1 but it isn’t trying to be.
