Evans reflects on his and Jaguar’s ‘strongest’ season

When Jaguar Racing joined Formula E in season three, they inevitably found themselves at a slight disadvantage as teams around them had already gained two years experience in the all-electric championship. The first season proved slow and a huge learning curve, with the team’s best result being a 4th place and 8th place at the Mexico City ePrix for Mitch Evans and Adam Carroll, respectively.  Nelson Piquet Jr, the season one champion in Formula E, then joined the team for season four alongside Evans.

Season Four, with the duo of Evans and Piquet Jr, proved to be more of a success. Evans earned his first ever pole position in Formula E and even managed to secure himself a podium finish after Daniel Abt’s disqualification in Hong Kong.

However, with the introduction of the Gen2 cars and Jaguar taking big steps such as producing most of their race car in-house, Evans has really had his time to shine and finally demonstrate the raw and impressive talent he has behind the wheel. Finally taking his first Formula E win this year and currently sitting in third in the drivers’ standings, the Kiwi could take the title this weekend. I caught up with him away from the track to hear his thoughts on his best Formula E season to date and how he and the team plan on tackling this possible career-defining weekend.

Lotterer found it “difficult to enjoy” the start of his Formula E career

Despite being one of the most experienced racing drivers on the current Formula E grid, racing in series such as the World Endurance Championship and previously winning the Super Formula Championship, Andre Lotterer confessed that the jump into Formula E “took time [in order] to feel at home and confident with everything”.

Talking to katyfairman.com, Lotterer, who experiences his first home ePrix this weekend in Berlin, explained that he found himself having “so much to learn in a really short time.”

“I am enjoying it a lot now, but it was difficult to enjoy it,” the Techeetah driver stated. “But as soon as we had some better results, [I am] feeling more confident with everything.

Buemi an ‘outsider’ for second Formula E championship this season

Sebastian Buemi, FIA Formula E’s season two drivers’ champion, has ruled himself out of being a front runner for this drivers’ title despite currently being fourth in the championship halfway through the season. The Renault e.Dams driver is 57 points behind that of championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne and after a DNF in the last round at Punta del Este, believes that he will remain an unlikely championship contender.

“To be honest, I am really far [behind] in the championship. I see myself more of an outsider fighting for wins from time to time. But of course if the world championship remains open that is amazing. But if not, I am not going to be sad. I am going to be pushing for one-off trying to do well and try to grab a win while I can.”

Issues with car have limited Evans’ Formula E success so far this season

Having entered Formula E after a 12 year absence from motorsport, the excitement levels and expectations for Jaguar’s return were high. Joining the all-electric championship from season three onwards resulted in a disappointing first year but season four has seen their performance go from strength to strength. Currently fourth in the team standings half-way through the season, Jaguar have earned over three times as many points in their campaign this year as they managed all of last season.

Whilst at the Geneva International Motors Show last month, I met up with one of their drivers, Mitch Evans, to hear his thoughts on the season so far, what we can expect from the remaining six races this year and his views on the newly-unveiled Gen2 Formula E car.

A day in the life of a Formula E driver

When Formula E returns for its fourth season next week, racing around the streets of Hong Kong in a spectacular double-header season opener, many racing drivers old and new to the championship will be embracing a new routine on race day.

Unlike most championships, Formula E squeezes the entirety of on-track action into one day, often a Saturday: everything from practice sessions, qualifying and of course the ePrix itself.  It is a non-stop day of racing and media duties, as well as time spent in the fan-focused eVillage.

With such an unusual schedule for a racing driver over a weekend, I caught up with Panasonic Jaguar’s Mitch Evans during Valencia Pre-Season Testing to discuss what the Kiwi racing driver gets up to on a standard Formula E race day.

Dillmann uncertain of Formula E future 

With FIA Formula E pre-season testing taking place in Valencia at the start of this month, it was noted that former Venturi driver Tom Dillmann had not been allocated any time for testing with the team, or any other team for that matter. 

He had jumped into the Formula E championship in Paris during season three despite minimal testing of any kind, finished his debut race in the points, continuing to impress in the Venturi until the season finale in Montreal. His performance in a car that had struggled all season must have been fustrating, however he carried on testing for the Monaco-based Formula E team over the summer months. So when it was confirmed that Dillmann would not be present at the pre-season testing, you can see why I was surprised to find him standing outside rival team garage Techeetah in the Valencia sun. 

“We are looking to pull something together,” Dillmann starts, as I question him about his future within Formula E, “but it doesn’t look like I will drive with Venturi.”

Is Formula E the most misunderstood motorsport?

Is Formula E the most misunderstood motorsport?

Can we just start off with me holding up my hands and saying ‘I get it’.

The noise isn’t quite soul-shattering, the speed might not be breath-taking and the lack of an actual engine is an unappealing factor for many, however Formula E continues to attract not only devoted fans and well-respected drivers, but major manufactures are flocking to the sport in outstanding numbers. Not bad when you consider that the championship is just about to wrap up its third season at a double-header in Montreal this weekend. Despite it’s success both on and off track, Formula E still hasn’t made it as a ‘fan favourite’ just yet. There is no denying that the sound and the battery have meant fans just can’t engage with the sport in the way they would like to but looking past those subjects, Formula E is one of motorsport’s strongest series. Yes, it is no IndyCar or Formula 1 but it isn’t trying to be.
