Why Sam Bird is Formula E’s finest talent

Sam Bird has proved himself to be one of the fastest, highly competitive and most consistent drivers in the four season history of the Formula E Championship. Until Audi’s Lucas di Grassi won his first race of season four in Zurich, Bird had been the only driver to win a race in every single season of the all-electric championship. This consistency is what has lead Bird to be in with a mathematical chance of winning the drivers’ title at every single Formula E finale*: a pretty impressive statistic.

His seven Formula E wins places him joint-second with di Grassi in the ranking of most successful Formula E drivers, with 34% of his races in Formula E resulting in a win or podium finish for the British driver.

Issues with car have limited Evans’ Formula E success so far this season

Having entered Formula E after a 12 year absence from motorsport, the excitement levels and expectations for Jaguar’s return were high. Joining the all-electric championship from season three onwards resulted in a disappointing first year but season four has seen their performance go from strength to strength. Currently fourth in the team standings half-way through the season, Jaguar have earned over three times as many points in their campaign this year as they managed all of last season.

Whilst at the Geneva International Motors Show last month, I met up with one of their drivers, Mitch Evans, to hear his thoughts on the season so far, what we can expect from the remaining six races this year and his views on the newly-unveiled Gen2 Formula E car.

“Harsh penalties” should be implemented to those that “cheat” Fanboost, according to Bird

FanBoost has been a controversial part of the Formula E weekend since it was introduced at the first ePrix at Beijing in 2014. The idea was to be able to give your favourite driver a ‘boost’ of energy which would then help them during the all-electric races around global city centres. Unfortunately for FanBoost, bots soon became involved and the chance to win FanBoost became less about your fan engagement and more about how much money you had to pay to get you up the rankings.
